How Should a CMMI Appraisal Process Be?

As outlined in the CMMI Process Model Framework, CMMI Assessment is an activity that assesses the efficacy and compliance of Specific Practices (SPs) of Process Areas (PAs). When using the CMMI Framework in accordance with Staged Representation, the assessment results are provided as a maturity level rating.
An assessor certified by the CMMI Institute conducts the assessment. Depending on the maturity level to be evaluated—Low Maturity (i.e., 2 and 3) or High Maturity (i.e., 4 and 5—the CMMI Institute Certified Assessor is referred to as a Lead Appraiser or High Maturity Lead Appraiser.

About SCAMPI Assessment
The three assessment classes—A, B, and C—were developed by the CMMI Institute based on the formalism needed for the assessment. The most formal and thorough of these is the SCAMPI A Assessment, which yields a Maturity Level Rating for the evaluation carried out for an organization. The less formal and rigorous SCAMPI B Assessment method does not yield a Maturity Level Rating for the assessment. In comparison to SCAMPI A and B assessments, the SCAMPI C assessment is the least formal method and does not offer a maturity level rating.
CMMI Practice Areas and Domains
During the appraisal process, to be eligible for an appraisal level, firms must fill the following table with the corresponding level. These practice areas should be filled in with the investigation and assessment of a Lead Appraiser.
Because these practice areas are regarded as “core”, this process must strictly be followed based on ISACA requirements. Also, as these practice areas are being done, corresponding domains must be filled in as in the chart below.
